When we reached the other side of the canyon, there was this huge stump with the tree shaft broken off. Jagjeet Singh thought we should get a picture taken with the stump in the background. Japnaam Singh looks like he's high on something and asking for more. Ranjeet Singh looks like he’s in a Samadhi even when standing up without bana! I can’t quite figure out how I look, you can come to your own conclusion…

This is a picture that Jagjeet Singh took of Japnaam Singh, Me and Ranjeet Singh on a little suspension bridge that connects the canyon. When Ranjeet Singh showed up at my door I expected him to be in his blue chola and a hazooria as usual, but to my surprise he was wearing a t-shirt and jogging pants!!! For the whole trip his appearance seemed to be out of place and did not suit him one bit.

This past summer Bhai Ranjeet Singh Jee from Toronto came to Surrey and we decided to embark on a hiking trek in Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver. I will be posting pictures of this over the next few days.

This picture is perhaps the only one in existence that depicts Japnaam Singh and me as evil sinister looking thugs! We never imagined that it would turn out this way.

UBC Conference

I have had the chance to attend quite a few of conference style meetings over the past 10 years. Most of ones organized by the “elders” had always had an element of contention of one kind or another. But most of the ones put up by youth were on average controversy free. I used to go to the meetings of all the big time gurdwara reps who wanted to free the surrey gurdwara from the clutches of the “koamnshuts” and at each one I was saddened to see so many disagreements on every level. If this is any indication of where my generation is headed then the next few years will indeed be very exciting!

The UBC Sikh Student’s Association hosted a conference Saturday afternoon on “Leadership by Gurmat.” The first UBC conference that I ever went to was the 1997 one and that one was GOOD! It was very well organized and it flowed very smoothly. It was sort of like one of those big NHL hall of fame induction ceremonies. Compared to that one this years conference was lacking in some aspects but was a success nonetheless.

But for me I think this was the best 4 hours I ever spent sitting on a chair. There were so many ideas thrown around that it was hard to digest it all fully. Compared to such experiences in the past I think this time my ability to retain information was exponentially greater. I realized many things that I had never paid attention to before.

Each speaker had something unique and interesting to offer to the people gathered there. Bibi Gurminder Kaur and Bhai Santbir Singh did a very good job of putting forth great examples of capable sikh leadership from our short history. Santbir Singh did get a little bit too emotional but overall he got his message across well. I think he should have been given at least an hour. One singh commented on Santbir Singh’s speech as saying that “he did not give an answer to the questions he posed.”

I think the best kind of speeches are those that inspire the mind to think on its own and formulate an answer. After all isn’t that what movies and books leave us with(haven’t watched a movie since grade 11) if all of our questions are answered right there what purpose does it serve, there would be nothing to talk about.
