Punjabi @ Khalsa School

Bibi Jaspreet Kaur (featured a few posts down) did something today even I haven’t been able to do. She put up a post on her space totally in Punjabi. That’s a first for any blog I think. It just shows that graduates of Khalsa School still have a great advantage over students who weren’t fortunate enough to attend.

Most (whitewashed) heroes I know involved with the Punjabi education system in public schools have the belief that the Punjabi language can be learnt without studying everything else that goes with the language- the culture, the geography, Punajab itself, customs, life and what actually goes on there. This isn’t true one bit, in fact it’s the exact opposite.

Having took grade 11 and 12 level classes in a public school it was clear students who had gone to khalsa school even for a year or two did way better than ones who hadn’t. They had a stronger command of language, and a greater overall grasp of the concepts taught.

That is not to say students who went to khalsa school had punajbi mastered. This just proves while khalsa school does have a lot of cultural factors contributing to the overall environment where Punjabi is taught, the level of proficiency still isn’t where it should be. This was true 10 years ago this is true today too. But even with this, khalsa school students would rank in the top 10% of all kids their age outside of India.

Again, Surrey’s unique strong pro-Punajbi-environment is a major part of this. It’s simple, learning a second language, in this case Punajbi is indeed a second language for most, is easier to learn if there’s a lot of exposure in places other than the classroom.

ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੈ ਅਤੇ **** ਵਾਟਰਲੂ ਆਈਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਨੂੰ ਫਿਕਰ ਸੀ ਕੇ ਮੇਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭੁਲ ਜਾਣੀ ਆ.. ਇਸ ਸੋਚਾ/ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਚਾਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਹੋ ਗੲੈ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਬੇਠੀ ਬੇਠੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਗਲ ਸੁਝੀ.. ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਬਲਾਗ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖਾਂਗੀ ... ਜੋ ਵੀ ਗਲ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਆ। ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਲਫਜ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖ ਦੇਵਾਂਗੀ ਅਤੇ ***** ਨੇ ਜਰੂਰ ਡੈਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਖਾਉਣਾ ਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪੀ ਘਰੇ ਗਈ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੱਸਨ ਗੇ ਨਾਲੇ ਠੀਕ ਲਫਜ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਨਗੇ... ਕੱਲਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੌਲੀਟੀਕਲ ਸਾਨਿਸ ਦਾ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਹੈ.. ਉਸ ਲਈ ਪੜਨ ਦੀ ਵਜਾਏ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਪੋਸਟ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਪੜਨ ਚੱਲੀ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕੇ “ਕਹਿਣਾਂ ਸੌਖਾ, ‘ਤੇ ਕਰਨਾ ਆਉਖਾ” .. ਮੇਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਪੋਸਟ ਲਿਖਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਮਿੰਟ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਗਲਾਂ ਮੈ ਦੋ ਮਸਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ.. ਜਿਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹਥੋਂ ਤਕ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਲਿਆ, ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਵੀ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ… ਕੁਛ ਪੱਲੇ ਪਿਆ? ਹੀ ਹੀ ਹੀ

As you can see she did very well! She went to khalsa school from grades KG-9. I doubt most ‘Punjabi’ kids will even be able to read this. But even with the minor inaccuracies a person who knows Punjabi will be able to understand everything properly without any problem. Isn’t this what everyone really needs? You just need to know what the other person’s trying to communicate to you, not the means used.
